Don't buy that souvenir and regret it
According to Marie Kondo, we know we shouldn’t be buying stuff and hoarding them. True, you want a memoir of your vacation in Paris, but is it really worth the money and space in your home? Think of these factors before you spend on souvenirs and you won’t wonder about that.
Can you use them? Are they just ornamental? If you can put whatever you buy into good use, like a bottle opener or a lighter, the chances of it being thrown aside is much lower. There are plenty of souvenirs that are practical – spoons, aprons, ashtrays etc. If you know they are guaranteed to be useful, that’s an excuse to buy them.
Melts in your mouth, not in your hands
We are not talking about M&Ms here, but the concept is the same. Gifts and souvenirs can be eaten and remembered for the gastronomic delights you have experienced. Bring a flavour of the country back home in treats and edibles for yourself and your friends or family. They make better impressions and memories than ornaments.
Made in XX
Is it really made in the country you visited or was it produced at a sweatshop in a developing country? The best is to get handmade crafts where you see the artist at work – leather goods or glass ware, or even brands that you know are home-grown – are better than buying something from Zara in the States that was made in China.
Where would you put it?
Imagine the piece of souvenir in your home. Would it be hanging in the living room as a centrepiece, on top of your display shelf or would it look terribly out of place in your house even though it looks splendid on its own?
Don’t shop at the airport
That’s usually for last-minute shoppers and they pay the price by footing a bill that’s twice as expensive. When you see a souvenir you like, think about it but ask yourself if you will regret giving it a miss. If you likely will, buy it before you decide to get it only at the airport.
