Wondering which Shimokitazawa hotels, cafe, bars or thrift stores to stay or shop at? This 'things to do in Shimokitazawa' guide is the perfect gift for you.

Immerse in the bohemian vibe in this trendy neighbourhood. While you are there, here are some places you should check out.

Hipster, artsy, indie, bohemian in Tokyo? That would mean Shimokitazawa. Although a little less well known than Shibuya and Shinjuku, this trendy neighbourhood has become popular over the recent years with both locals and foreigners alike. Here are some highlights of the hood.

There is an abundance of second-hand and vintage stores in the area. If you rummage through the heaps and piles, you may find a gem that is wallet-friendly. Head first to Stick Out, where everything is just 700 yen, or even as low as 100 yen on the sale racks. Within a block of one another would be Wego, Big Time or Mode Off, a few shops good for affordable used clothing. You can offload your clothes at New York Joe Exchange, a store that sells imported, non-branded and used clothing.

Who would think you’d have fun at Mother? – a bar that is themed eclectically and retains a tinge of classiness along with it. You can play your own CDs if you don’t like the rock music in the house. If soul and R&B is more your thing, you might enjoy Algonquin’s Bar that is hidden from plain sight but is actually just a 10-min walk from the Shimokitazawa station. Live music is also good in the area, and Shimokitazawa Three has a regular hive of independent and upcoming bands.

Cafes Article Photo Canva Resized

Cafes are all around Shimokitazawa. If you enjoy a cuppa with art in your cup, you might like Ballon d’Essai’s efforts in their latte art. We aren’t sure if Frankie is a spin-off from the Australian magazine but this café brings the Melbourne coffee culture to Tokyo. Whether or not you like Frankie magazine, you can visit the namesake for its Aussie vibe. If you are serious about your coffee, you should put Bear Pond Espresso to the test. Katsa Tanaka is a barista who honed his barista skills in NYC and brought his skills to his home city. Their famed espresso is served only until 1pm because they sell only 30 per day.

FOOD Article Photo Canva Resized

There’s a street food galore in the area, so you can go around snacking happily. There are some that you shouldn’t miss, such as Toyochinotamago, an egg pudding that’s extremely creamy and silky. Tenmaya offers curry in a croquette with bits of beef and vegetables. If you are so hungry you could eat a horse, head to Sendaiya, a natto (fermented soy beans) store that offers an all-you-can-eat option. If you are looking for an Izakaya, go to Totoshigure, where you can order skewers in an old Japanese house. Same goes for Kokera and Shirube. However, don’t miss Shimokita Cage, which is almost a permanent kitchen under the train tracks. This space hosts food trucks with a prison-like façade that is actually one of the most welcoming dining communes in the city.

This neighbourhood has a lot to offer, not just what’s mentioned above. You might spot mime artists on the streets and quirky stores such as Ehimade, which sells artisanal products that include the imabari towel. A health food chain Natural House is also located here, so don’t worry about not finding organic products. Swing Toys sells, of course, toys – from Disney to Marvel to anime. If you are looking to have books and beer at one place, B&B is where we will catch you spending your afternoon.
