Be whisked away

May you be spirited away in these whisky bars as you gape and astound at their collection. The owner of Shot Bar Zoetrope has an impressive trove of Japanese whisky, including Ichiro and rare Chichibu bottlings that seem to have disappeared from everywhere else. Right up the 25th floor of Park Hotel sits The Society, with Scotch Malt Whisky Society whiskies that can hardly be found outside the members-only society based in Scotland. While at Campbeltoun Loch, you will found no-longer-produced Karuizawa Japanese whisky or a 1980s Mars Single Malt from the Shinsyu Distillery. You pay a 1,000 cover charge at Cask Strength, but the incredible Scotch and Japanese whisky selection makes it worth the penny. Let’s just name drop here: how about an eight-year Glen Mhor scotch from 1980 or some 1989 Karuizawa Japanese whisky?

Know your tails and be cocky

Know your tails and be cocky Article Photo Canva Resized

You know you can really be cocky when you’ve had your bespoke cocktail and can name the flavours in it, not just because it was created just for you. The cocktail genius Hiroyasu Kayama will concoct a unique blend at Ben Fiddich as long as you forgive the pun. Tucked away in Ebisu is Bar Trench, with character bursting out of its humble abode. The cocktails there are experimental and use spirits like Picon and vegetable bitters, and did we mention fish-infused rice spirit? If you are conventional for a good reason, head to High Five. The respected venue in Ginza will not fail you at your classic cocktails as they have highly trained mixologists. If you are a film buff, you should appreciate a bar where you can have cocktails named after movie titles. Hachigatsu No Kujira gives you a bit of a cheap thrill when you sip on a glass of The Godfather while your pal drinks a Titantic. Lupin is a veteran in the cocktail bar scene in Tokyo, having been around since 1928. To add to its classic reputation, this haunt was frequented by many Japanese authors during the Showa period. To honour that, pictures of them are pasted across the walls.

The view is everything

Our expectations are sky-high when it comes to having a view. How else to best appreciate Tokyo’s city lights if not over a drink at a vantage point? On the 45th floor of The Ritz Carlton sits Lobby Lounge. The stylish décor complements the exterior landscape. This place is perfect for a daytime cocktail as you do not have to sit under the ruthless sun. If that’s not high enough, go up to New York Bar atop Park Hyatt Tokyo for magnificent views of downtown and live jazz music. For a paranomic view of Kabukiza Theatre, you can head to Oribe Classic Bar, which was named after Furuta Oribe, a samurai and master of the tea ceremony. Why not quench your thirst after watching a show at the theatre itself? Looking for a posh experience? BVLGARI La Terrazza Lounge says it all. There you can enjoy premier champagne Don Perignon while admiring the skyline.
