Explore your options on how to get to this natural sanctuary.
Inle doesn’t have an airport, so most people fly from Yangon or Mandalay to Heho. That’s 46km northwest of Inle Lake. The town nearest to Inle is Nyaung Shwe, and from Heho it will take you about 45 minutes by taxi to get there. You can opt for cheaper options by bus or pick-up trucks, but they depart from the town of Heho, about 3 kilometres southeast of the airport.
It’s cheap as it costs only USD14-20 from Yangon, but it includes 12 hours of an uncomfortable and bumpy ride. From Mandalay, it's only USD12 and takes a shorter time, about 7-8 hours. Buses are also available at Bagan and Kalaw. The buses arrive at Nyaung Shwe, where it will be walking distance to many guest houses. It’s been said that the buses blast the air condition and it can be uncomfortable to sleep.
Train services depart from Kalaw, Thazi and Yangon and go directly to Shwe Nyaung. It takes about 3.5 hours from Kalaw. However, it's a gruelling 30 hours from Yangon, which includes a 5-hour stop in Thazi. From Kalaw, the price of a lower class ticket is only 500K, which equates to USD0.30. An upper class ticket costs 1,150K, which you will gladly pay for. From Yangon, it costs about 4,000K and 9,400K for the lower class ticket and the upper class ticket respectively. The train station named Shwe Nyaung has taxis that can bring you to your accommodation in Nyaung Shwe.
Pick-up / Line-ka
If you depart from Taunggyi, a cheap option that takes you only an hour is to get on a pick-up. It costs only USD0.40. The bus from Yangon might drop you off near Shwe Nyaung station and you can also take a USD8 ride into town. If you spot a pick-up truck, it will be cheaper.
Note the tourist tax
Prepare 15,000K or USD10 for tax when you visit Nyaung Shwe (which you need in order to get to the lake). The fee is collected at a toll post when driving or hiking into town.
