Interested in Peranakan culture? Explore Joo Chiat which is rich in Peranakan history. Here's what to eat and do in Joo Chiat that can leave you satisfied.

“Joo Chiat smells like delicious gossip.” This quote by a Joo Chiat local beautifully sums up the district. Home to the Peranakans (Straits-born Chinese folk) best known for their fiery tempers and cuisine and matriarchic system, this neighbourhood, bursting with life, houses some of the country’s best eateries.

Joo Chiat is synonymous with Peranakan culture. Peranakans are defined as the Straits-born Chinese, the descendants of Chinese immigrants who came to Malaya between the 15 th and 17 th centuries. The men were called ‘Baba’ and the women, ‘Nyonas’. This eclectic cultural mix resulted in a unique melting pot of cultures within the Peranakan communities, unique to Southeast Asia.

Here’s a #RoamChecklist that will take you through the enclave's most gorgeous spots.

Peranakan Shophouses

Take a gander and fall in love with colourful Peranakan architecture – almost a lost art in itself. Snap some shots of the iconic, historical Peranakan shophouses that are preserved under Singapore’s conservation rule. There are still people living in these shophouses.
